Jay Winger Obituary

Jay A. Winger, 64, of Avilla, Indiana, passed away at 9:06 p.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Parkview Regional Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born on March 23, 1961, in Muncie, Indiana, to James Allan Winger and Linda Sue (Charnley) Winger. Jay was a 1980 graduate of Fort Wayne Homestead High School. He was a longtime member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Avilla. He worked at Scott's for 7½ years and at several Kroger stores for 25 years, concluding his career at the Auburn Kroger. A proud member of the Avilla Knights of Columbus, the Avilla Lions Club, and the Northern Indiana Bluegrass Association, Jay valued his community and the friendships he built. He enjoyed watching movies, caring for his tropical fish-a hobby he began at age 16-and attending bluegrass festivals. His love for music and his warm personality enriched the lives of many. He is survived by his parents, James Allan and Linda Sue (Charnley) Winger of Fort Wayne; his brother, James Andrew (Sandra) Winger; his sister, Julie Annette Winger Goldsmith all of Fort Wayne; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Jack and Dorothy Charnley; his paternal grandfather, Herman Winger; and his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth (Sills) Callahan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 228 N. Main St., Avilla, on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 11:00 am, with Father Dave Voors officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at Brookside Memorial Park in Montpelier, Indiana. We sat behind Jay in church each week. He always turned and waved at us when we sat down. He did an awesome job ringing the bells in church. He was such a sweet person. We will miss him a lot. When he had his surgery we took him to church and Rick took him to the grocery store when he needed to go. We are so sorry we will miss the funeral. We have to watch our grandson. We will miss JayOur thoughts and prayers are with you all.
