Jean Haswell Calderone passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2025, at her home in Durham.
She was born in Durham on December 3, 1950. She was the daughter of the late Elton and Ruby Haswell.
Jean was a Durham native who graduated from Southern High School and Watts School of Nursing. She worked at UNC Memorial Hospital Chapel Hill in the cardiac intensive care but most of her years were in the UNC Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. She was known for her skills in successfully placing IVs, especially in children. She was a very dedicated nurse with patients always receiving excellent care for over 30 plus years.
Jean loved being a mother to her daughter Megan and was beyond proud when Megan followed in her footsteps becoming a nurse. Jean retired to be the greatest Nana in the world to her twin grand girls and later their little sister. All her girls were the love of her life and she treasured every minute spent with them.
She was an avid Duke basketball fan – you did not bother with her when Duke was playing. Another passion of hers was General Hospital and the Game Show Network. She loved keeping up with friends through Facebook.
Jean was a great sister to her siblings, one they could count on for advice but most of all for support and love. Family was the center of her world no matter what.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Megan C. Overton; granddaughters, Kacey, Kameryn and Ruby Overton; brother, Joel Haswell (Martha), sisters Jan Haswell and Joy Jenkins (Rusty); nephews, Ross Haswell and Justin Jenkins; and nieces, Elaine Carey and Katy Jenkins Elliott (John). She also leaves behind her wonderful neighbors that always looked out for her and countless friends – all that will miss her being a constant in their lives.
The family will visit with friends and family on Saturday, May 31st from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm in the Gathering Room at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.
