Jean Grootenboer, 98, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 15, 2025 in Middletown, NJ.
She was born in Passaic, NJ where she spent her formative years. She graduated from Passaic High School in 1945 and later from Averett College in Danville, VA with an Associates Degree in 1947. After college she worked in the retail industry at Hahne's Department Store in Newark, NJ. She married her best friend, Neil, in 1948 and had one son. Her husband's career ultimately resulted in a move to Brick Township at the Jersey shore in 1957. While in Brick, Jean was actively involved in the PTA, serving as President for 2 years at the Midstreams School. After PTA, she became a member of the Ocean County chapter of the League of Women voters, involved particularly in fund raising. A relocation to Bergen county, NJ in 1967 resulted in a new opportunity years later in 1980 as a member of the US Census Bureau. Jean and Neil returned to Ocean County in 1998 as part of their retirement and had an opportunity to travel and visit with family and friends. She recently moved to Middletown to be closer to her family.
Jean's greatest pride was being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and homemaker throughout her life.
She is survived by her son, Neil, daughter-in-law, Rita, grandchildren Dana (Rob) and Craig (Jennifer) and 4 great grandchildren Madison, Devin, Avery and Braden. She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil, parents, George and Rebecca Muller, sister Dorothy Treier, and infant brother George.
A funeral mass will be offered on Friday June, 20, 2025 at 10 AM at Christ Episcopal Church, 90 Kings Highway, Middletown.
Burial will follow at East Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clifton, NJ.
