Elizabeth Jean McDade joined the love of her life, Homer R. McDade, on September 7, 2025 at Hennis Care Centre of Dover surrounded by family. Homer preceded her in death on August 23, 2020. Jean was born in Tyndall, Ohio on February 10, 1927 to the late Carey Simpsey and Bertie Mabel (Richardson) Dickerson.
Jean and Homer married on October 13, 1973 and had many happy years together. They were known for their hospitality and never met a stranger. They worked hard together to maintain their home and property on State Route 800 in Dover.
Her early years were spent in the Coshocton area where she graduated from Roscoe High School in 1946 and worked at the glove factory. She moved to Dover in the late 50s where she would raise her family. In Dover, she worked at the Downtown Restaurant, which is where she met Homer. She also worked at JCPenney and TG & Y, but found her passion to be taking care of Homer.
Jean was very ornery and always good for a laugh even up until the final days. She loved playing her favorite card games like Canasta, Halzey and Euchre, as well as Yahtzee with family and friends. She didn't enjoy watching TV, so would pass time doing word search puzzles, playing solitaire, or wearing out her many electronic Yahtzee games. Crocheting was also enjoyed earlier in life, as well as making patchwork quilts and sewing.
Memories that stuck with her were being badly burned when she was 4 years old, working on the farm including milking cows and carrying buckets of milk up the big hill, and helping take care of her younger siblings as she was the oldest daughter. She talked about the many trips she and Homer made with his Army group. Sunday dinner was always important - she made the best beef and noodles! Many memories were made baking cookies together during the holidays.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Jean (Veigel) Wright, step-son Richard McDade, all of her siblings: Robert (Lois) Dickerson, Jack Dickerson, Harold Dickerson, Donis Dickerson, Colleen (Jack) Lillibridge, Eileen (Raymond) Cunningham as well as sister/brother-in-laws Ed (Doris) McDade, Andy (Marge) McDade, Walter (Inez) McDade, Paul (Hope) McDade, Jack McDade and Glen McDade.
She is survived by her children Ron Veigel of Clyde, OH, Randy Veigel of Dover and Diane (Dave) Saffell of Wauseon, OH, as well as grandchildren Brittany (Jed) Nieman of Sylvania, OH, Krista (David) Kempf of Goshen, IN, Andrew (Shannon) Saffell of Archbold, OH and Thomas Wright II; great-grandchildren Sophie and Emberly Nieman, Ellie and Ezra Kempf, and Asa and Samuel Saffell, daughter-in-law Debbie McDade as well as Homer's children, Mary Ann McDade, Ron (Connie) McDade, Rose (Dave) Mushrush along with many step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Lois Gress, Leona Dickerson, Pat McDade, Terrence McDade and many extended family.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 15, 2025 from 10 to 11 AM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover where a funeral service will begin at 11 AM with her grandson, Andrew Saffell officiating. Burial will be in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens at Dover.
