Neva Jean Smith, 81, of New Philadelphia, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2025 in Ohio’s Hospice Truman House at New Philadelphia, following a period of declining health.
Born in Dennison, Neva was the daughter of the late Robert W. and Neva L. (Jones) Whitman and had formerly worked for the former Midvale VFW at Midvale and the former K-Mart in New Philadelphia.
Neva was a former member of the Midvale VFW Auxiliary and a six-year member of the former Indian Valley North Band Boosters.
She is survived by her children, James Whitman of Port Washington; Amy Septer and her boyfriend, Paul Cardani of New Philadelphia, Lorri Beach of Troy, Illinois and Buster Smith of Akron; four grandchildren, Yvonne Whitman, Tyler Gilmore, Shay Whitman and Courtney Gilmore; a sister, Kay Buckey of Sherrodsville and her best friend, Barba McCune of New Philadelphia.
In addition to her parents, Neva was reunited with her husband, Edward Smith, her step-father, Robert “Albie” Neighbor, three sisters, Betty Kosegi, Judith Forny, Sheila Nichols and her three brothers, Robert Whitman, James Whitman and Ronald Whitman.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation care is to be provided by the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia and a private family inurnment will take place at a later time at Schoenbrunn Meadow Cemetery in New Philadelphia.
Memorial contributions in Neva’s memory may be directed to Ohio’s Hospice – Truman House, 716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
