AUGUSTA - Jean MacPherson Matheson passed away at home on April 10, 2023. Jean was born in Chicago, Illinois to James Davidson MacPherson and Clara Ross MacPherson on May 11, 1932.
Jean lived in Buffalo and Syracuse, New York and graduated from Nottingham High School in Syracuse. She came to Maine, the birthplace of her father, to attend Farmington State Teachers College (now University of Maine at Farmington) where she earned a B.S. in Education.
In 1954, she married her college sweetheart, Brandon Arlo Matheson. They settled in Augusta, where they began their careers as educators, and they had one child, Margaret E. (Meg) Matheson. Jean taught for nearly 30 years in the Augusta school system and derived great pleasure from watching youngsters learn, grow and bloom in her care.
Jean enjoyed playing cards and other games, crafting, baking, and collecting friends throughout her life. She made several trips to visit family in Scotland and in retirement traveled this country making friends and visiting family, including wintering in Florida for over 30 years. She was especially grateful for all of the caring individuals that made it possible for her to remain in her home in the last years of her life. Jean was a beloved mother, cherished wife, respected teacher and steadfast friend.
Jean was a member of South Parish Congregational Church where she had served as a deacon. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority for more than 60 years, and in her later years took great delight in being a member of the Kennebec Valley Garden Club.
Jean was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Brandon; and her brother, Ross J. MacPherson of Bozeman, Montana.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Meg Matheson and Frank Wiltuck, of Augusta; sister-in-law, Susan MacPherson, of Bozeman, Montana; numerous nieces and nephews; and her extended family of so many friends and relatives.
A service will be held for Jean on Saturday, April 29 at 10:30 in the morning at South Parish Congregational Church, 9 Church Street, Augusta.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Brandon A. Matheson and Jean MacPherson Matheson Scholarship at the UMF Ferro Alumni Center, 242 Main Street, Farmington, ME 04938 or to South Parish Congregational Church.
Arrangements are in the care of the Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church Street, Augusta where condolences and memories may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the funeral home website by visiting www.khrfuneralhomes.com

As long as I can remember my father, Harold Ross, always called her "Jeannie Mac". She was one of dad's favorite nieces. Jean loved to play cards, a must in the Ross family, and herself a big card.
One story to share. When dad was 10 or 11, after school one day, he walked over to see his sister, Clara. Jean, just a toddler had crawled out onto an open window on the second floor of the home. Dad in a state of panic ran and stood under the window ready to catch his niece if she were to fall. He yelled over and over again for his sister before Clara realized what was going on. Dad said the experience sure tested the strength of his young heart.
Sincere condolences to her family and friends. Love from John & Karen Ross

Jean and I met in Syracuse, NY while we were dating our guys. We hit it off right away and shared several double dates. We experienced many years as family and friends. Our families expanded with children and cousins to become close. I will miss my sister Jean as we shared years of life. Thank heavens for Meg to keep Jeans spirit going. Love to you, Susan

Jean is my Aunt by marriage but from the very first moment I met her she let me know and feel I was her family. Because of miles we didn´t get to visit often but I loved hearing her talk and the stories she told. Especially those of her and my father in law. I can only imagine the laughter and joy she is having in heaven with her loved ones. But, she will sure be missed here. Thinking of you Meg, Love Sheila MacPherson
