Jean Durst Steimer

Our mom, Jean Audrey Durst Steimer, passed away at age 98 on 29 July in Boca Raton, FL, where she resided for a little over a year. She was born the eldest child of Elmer and Loretta (Kraeuter) Durst in Pittsburgh, PA. She graduated from Munhall High School in 1945. Mom married Orvis Steimer in 1954 and they spent 67 years together until his death in 2021, most of it in Ligonier, PA. She is preceded in death by her sister Marilyn Barker.

Mom is survived by her brother, Elmer Durst, of Monroeville, PA and her five children:

Beth Steimer (David Jeter), of Washougal, WA, Marc (Aimee) Steimer of Cincinnati, OH, David Steimer of Ligonier, PA, Nancy Steimer of Ligonier, PA, and Amy (Tim) Kelleher of Boca Raton, FL.

Mom loved to hear accounts of her 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren and always asked about therm. Grandchildren are Kara (Scott) Langer, Kali (Josh) Rozell, Kelsey Jeter, Marc (Nicole) Steimer Jr., Eric Steimer, Adam (Pershank) Steimer, Justin (Britne) Steimer, Ryan Eilenfield, and Aaron Eilenfield. Great-grandchildren are Cameron Langer, Lennox Langer, Lachlan Gonzalez, Scarlett Jean Jeter, and Aiden Steimer.

Mom's early employment included Isaly's, Homestead Steel, and Bell of Pennsylvania. She began working for Latrobe Steel Company (later Timken Latrobe Steel) in the 1960s in the data processing department, eventually becoming a supervisor.

After her retirement from Latrobe Steel, mom and dad spent time between Ligonier, PA and their second home in Ft Pierce, FL, for 20+ years. In earlier years, there were many camping trips with the kids. Several times they travelled to France and Italy. A road trip out west and into Canada was a highlight. Mom visited 5 cities in Asia in 1997. Beth fondly remembers bus trips with mom to Florida and Mexico in the 70s (one with her mother Loretta along). Mom encouraged her children to experience new places, whether for jobs or travel, which may partly explain why we are spread out over America!

We feel blessed to have had our mom in our lives for as long as we did. We will miss her dearly.

A Requiem Mass and private interment at The National Cemetery of the Alleghenies is planned for September.
