Jean Torrence Obituary

Jean Elizabeth Torrence

12/24/1927 - 04/02/2023

Jean Elizabeth Torrence passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 2, 2023 at the Elizabeth Scott Community in Maumee, OH. Born on December 24, 1927 in Bowling Green, OH to Viola (Mayhew) Oman and Kennard Oman, she married Glen Torrence (deceased, 2009) in 1949. Jean and Glen spent their entire married lives as active members of the Heatherdowns Church of the Brethren in Toledo.

Jean is survived by her younger brother, Kennard (Skip) Oman; three children, David (Nita), Becky (Paul) Bryant, and Sue (Henry) Valle. Of 9 grandchildren, she was preceded in death by Chelsey; and survived by Jenner, Jesse (Oana Cheta), Seth (Michelle) Schroeder, Sara (Alec) Kirstein, Ryan (Kirby) Valle, Meghan (Patrick) Walker, Austin (Gina) Valle; 9 great-grandchildren, Sasha and Nadia, Tyler and Robin, Logan and Marcus, Raferty, Grey and Holden.

As a mother, she managed an incredibly stable home; always present were ample meals on the table, lunches packed, drawers full of clean clothes. Never present were spousal disputes or fights. We just thought that's the way it was. How lucky we were. She never had a passport, but managed to leave all three of her children with relatively open minds to other cultures and viewpoints and a willingness to travel. She may have occasionally chased us around the kitchen with a yardstick on a bad day, but even that seemed ultimately to foster a loyalty in her offspring.

She lived a life of service to her family as well as to her church; the sort of service that is not openly celebrated or honored, but none the less, essential. She enjoyed bowling and spent some time at the Timbers in Maumee. One of her prized possessions while living at Elizabeth Scott Community was her 'bowler of the week' trophy.

Family will receive friends at the Witzler-Shank-Walker Funeral Home at 222 E. South Boundary St., Perrysburg, between 2 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, with the funeral service at 5 p.m. at Perrysburg First Methodist Church with a dinner to follow. Thanks to Elizabeth Scott Community and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their professional and compassionate care of Jean. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Heifer International or the Church of the Brethren. Online condolences may be shared at walkerfuneralhomes.com

We are so sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. Jean was so nice to all of us when First Church would have their hayrides and fall parties at their home. Sue, our prayers are with you, Henry and your family. May you feel God's peace and strength through this sorrowful time.
