Jeannette Davis

Jeannette "Jan" Davis died peacefully at North Hill in Needham, MA January 5, 2023. She was 96.
Born in Winsted, CT, Jan was the daughter of Robert Davis, a Congregational minister, and Ruth (Hollenback) Davis, a homemaker. She had three older siblings. Jan was a graduate of Putnam, CT high school and had a bachelor's degree from Hartford Seminary and the University of Connecticut. She later received her master's degree in counseling from the University of Colorado, and worked as a guidance counselor for many years. Her last position was as a guidance counselor at Newton North High School.
As a young woman Jan worked at a work camp in Norway, repairing war damaged forests, and taught school at a girls' English language school in Turkey. She was a life-long member of the Appalachian Mountain Club. Having her summers free, she attended numerous AMC "August Camps" in places like British Columbia. She and her good friend, Betty Byers, attended AMC Cold River Camp for one week each of fifteen or so years, and frequently skied and hiked at the two White Mountain lodges run by the AMC. Jan hiked all of the 45 peaks over 4000' in New Hampshire. She enjoyed biking and was a volunteer with "Bikes Not Bombs." Jan was an active member of the Congregational Church of Needham.
