Obituary published on Legacy.com by Southern Utah Mortuary - Cedar City on May 16, 2025.
Ethel Jeannine Thompson Schrandt was born in
Cedar City, Utah, on February 24, 1934, to Sidney Judd Thompson and Ethel Stratton Thompson. She grew up in Cedar with her parents, brothers, grandparents and with lots of aunts, uncles and cousins nearby. She went to Cedar City schools, including one year at the College of Southern Utah.
In her last year of high school, she met Edward Leon Schrandt. She married him in Cedar City after he came back from military service in Korea. When Ed completed his military service and college education they moved to California where they lived for 40 years. They were sealed in the Los Angeles California Temple.
In California, Jeannine was a fantastic stay-at-home mom to her four children. When the children were young, the family did a lot of camping in tents, and eventually a tent trailer, throughout the western United States, but especially the Utah mountains. Jeannine went back to school and completed a secretarial science degree. When Ed retired from work, they moved back to Cedar City.
Jeannine was always active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which was one of the most important things in her life. Back in Cedar City she volunteered at the Family History Center for several years. Throughout her life, Jeannine was very diligent in searching her family history line and spending lots of time trying to find and collect documents. Since she was a teenager she had many enjoyable church callings.
Jeannine also loved nature - clouds, rain, lightening, flowers, mountains, earthquakes, and dogs (especially black and white ones). She loved to travel, hike, and fish. She loved quilting and crocheting. She loved books - history, geology, and mystery.
But most of all, Jeannine was a nurturing soul who found her greatest joy in caring for her children and grandchildren. Her love knew no bounds- whether through a warm meal lovingly prepared, a garden full of vibrant flowers, or a gentle word of encouragement. A true lover of nature, she had a deep appreciation for the beauty of plants, flowers, and animals, and her garden was a reflection of the care and love she poured into every aspect of her life. Along with her warmth and generosity, she was known for her sharp wit and sense of humor, always ready with a clever remark or a laugh that lifted everyone's spirits. Nothing brought her more happiness than being surrounded by her family, spoiling her grandchildren, and making sure everyone knew just how deeply they were loved. Her light, laughter, and love will live on in all of us.
Jeannine passed away in Layton, Utah, on April 14, 2025 at the age of 91. Jeannine is preceded in death by her husband and her son and is survived by her 3 daughters and their husbands, 9 grandchildren, 12 great- grandchildren, and 3 brothers and their wives.
