Jeffrey Lee Check passed peacefully from this life into Life Eternal on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, following an extended illness. He was born on June 8, 1957, in Charlotte, NC, to Louise and Joseph Check. Raised in Tarboro, NC, Jeff loved playing sports, developing long-lasting friendships, and being part of a large family. He graduated from Tarboro High School in 1975, enrolled in North Carolina State University, and earned his degree in industrial engineering in 1979. While a student at NC State, he met his wife, Nancy, and they married on June 7, 1980, at Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Following a long career in furniture manufacturing that included moves to Lexington, North Carolina, Dallas, Texas, Louisville, Kentucky, and Fairburn, Georgia, he and Nancy made their family's permanent home in Lexington, NC. Jeff achieved his teaching certification in 2002, and was a well-respected teacher and coach at both Central Davidson Middle School and Lexington Middle School. He retired in 2017 and enjoyed working in real estate, traveling with Nancy and friends, and spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid Wolfpack and Atlanta Braves fan.
Jeff was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church. He was an ordained Deacon, served as longtime Sunday School Superintendent, taught Sunday School, and was an Advisor to the middle school youth group, Young Disciples. Jeff was often found comforting babies in the nursery and had a knack for making others feel welcomed.
In addition to his church activities, Jeff also loved and participated in his community. He coached his children's soccer, basketball, and baseball teams; and coached Central Davidson Middle School girls' basketball, and Lexington Middle School tennis and golf. Jeff was a gym superintendent for the Davidson County Recreation Department. In his retirement, he was a near-constant presence at the BBQ Center in Lexington.
Left to "hang tough," as he would say, and remember him fondly are his beloved wife and partner of 44 years, Nancy Welby Check; daughter, Sydne Check Allen (Travis), son, Joseph Welby Check (Andreana), daughter, Meredith Anne Check (Adam); grandsons, Barrett, Henry, Eli, and Crosby; siblings, Barbara Andrews (Gus), Mary Jo Smithwick, David Check, John Check (Sheryl), and Steve Check; and a whole slew of nieces, nephews, cousins, and chosen family.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the Duke Lung Transplant Team, and the nursing team and staff of Unit 7800 at Duke Hospital in Durham for their excellent care and their constant support. The family also extends their gratitude to all their communities in every place, who have supported Jeff in his transplant journey especially through constant prayer, which gave him endurance and energy to persevere.
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection and a Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, July 27th at First Presbyterian Church of Lexington, with Rev. Jon Martin and Rev. Sydne Check Allen officiating. A brief visitation will be held in the fellowship hall at 12 noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to consider a memorial gift to the Young Disciples middle school ministry at First Presbyterian Church, Pastor's Pantry, or Duke Lung Transplant Foundation.
The family is being assisted by Clements Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc. in Durham. Online condolences may be sent to www.clementsfuneralservice.com.
