Jeff was a lifelong salesperson, traveling all over the US for multiple companies, following in his father's footsteps. The family owned a home near the beach in Ormond by the Sea, but also owned a horse farm in Ormond where Jeff spent a lot of time with the family. However, Jeff's real love and passion was racing and motorsports and this is where his nickname, the Hammer! was born!
Jeff - the Hammer! was a long-time crew chief and motorsports engineer working for multiple amateur, semi-professional and professional race teams. Multiple teams had Jeff, "the Hammer" as the crew chief, setting up cars, making adjustments based on driver feedback and making all the strategy calls. We all liked to call him Obi-Wan-Kenobi as he was a master of all things racing. The teams Jeff led won over 200 races, and many championships with the Hammer at the helm and included young up and coming drivers even from the age of 16 rose the ranks of racing to NASCAR, IndyCar ladder and professional sports car racers to multiple well established NASCAR drivers. Jeff was incredibly respected by drivers, other crew chiefs, other teams and officials and the crews that worked directly under his tutelage. He really was known as a racing genius and understood car and suspension dynamics and racing data as well as anyone in the country and could interpret data and feedback to make changes to cars that led to so much success. Another little-known fact about the Hammer – he often would attend the Sebring 12-hour race in Sebring, Florida even long before he was intimately involved in motorsports. Once there as a spectator Jeff was listening to two racing officials that were incorrectly identifying cars coming around the track and relaying that information on a headset. Jeff, not known to be a big talker, started correcting the official. Those officials quickly realized that Jeff knew more about the racing field and asked him if he wanted a job for the weekend helping spot cars and relay information for a brand new television channel that was going to broadcast the race including a ring side seat, food and pay for the event. Jeff said of course and was hoisted onto a TV platform and given a headset and could even identify the cars by the headlights at night, always shocking the broadcast team. That tv channel – ESPN. With his brothers Randy and Tim, Jeff worked on cars even in high school fixing them up and souping them up into hotrods. Jeff also at one time owned a split window, side piped blue Corvette he always wished he had never gotten rid of. Jeff equally loved his tractor at the family horse farm in Ormond, and was always trying to work on Lorri's list of farm "honey do's" often distracted though by working on race cars or out of town at a race track sitting on a pit box watching his cars win races.
Jeff, although a quiet person, was deeply competitive and loved to outsmart, outwit, outplay and out engineer and beat others at the racetrack. Jeff's love and intensity, smiles, handshakes and hugs will be deeply missed by all.
Jeff was simply a great one and we lost him all too soon.
