Jeffrey Wayne Voorhees, 80, of Johnston, Iowa, passed away on February 10, 2025. He was born on June 1, 1944, to Grant and Margaret Voorhees. He is survived by his beloved wife, Arlene; their children, Cynthia (Jim), Tyler (Lee), and Calley Willis (Josh); as well as his eight grandchildren: Tristan, Xion, Leo, Joshua, Romy, Benjamin, Grant, and Emma.
Jeff attended Iowa State University (1962-1966), where he not only earned his architectural degree but also met the love of his life, Arlene. In the fall of 1966, he began law school at Georgetown University, but his path took a turn when he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1967. Jeff proudly served as a lieutenant until returning home in 1969, after which he and Arlene settled in Waukee, Iowa, to raise their family.
Beginning his career as an architect, Jeff worked as a draftsman in his father's architectural firm, a firm which worked on notable Iowa landmarks such as the Botanical Center. He later took over his father's business, focusing on designing multifamily housing and schools for rural communities across Iowa. Over the years, Jeff became a recognized expert in affordable housing, developing vital housing for elderly and family communities across Iowa and even in Arizona. His work left a lasting legacy, positively impacting numerous rural towns and improving the lives of thousands.
Music played a significant role in Jeff's life. One of his greatest joys was performing in Iowa State University's production of The Fantasticks with his brother, delighting friends with his memorable lines over the years. Jeff also revived his passion for the piano in his 40s, taking lessons every Monday morning. His love for music culminated in his cherished participation in the choir at Plymouth Congregational Church including the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful team at Suncrest Hospice for their support and care during Jeff's final days.
A funeral service will be held on February 17, 2025, at 2 PM at Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Plymouth Congregational Church.
Jeff will be remembered for his love of family, his dedication to his community, and his lifelong passion for music and architecture. His legacy will live on in the many lives he touched.
