Jeffry Todd Bunce
September 25, 1960 - October 2, 2025. Forever in our hearts
Jeff had a way of showing up that made people feel welcome and comfortable. His joy was generous, his laugh contagious, and his heart wide open.
Jeffry Todd Bunce was born in
Topeka, Kansas, on September 25, 1960, a birthday he shared with his niece Jennifer, which he often pointed out. An accident at 18 months old left him deaf, and it became a defining part of his life. He attended the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley and was part of the vibrant deaf communities in California, as well as in Topeka and Kansas City.
He moved between Kansas and California throughout his life, starting with a family move to Cloverdale, California, in 1969. But no matter where he lived, Jeff brought the same warmth, humor, and stubborn determination that made him unforgettable.
Jeff was a powerhouse bowler, earning three gold trophy rings for perfect 300 games in tournaments. He loved the sport so much, and it loved him back.
He also loved music and dancing. Even without hearing the notes, he felt the rhythm through the floor, the speakers, or whatever was nearby. Life, to Jeff, was like a song. You didn't need ears to listen; you just needed heart.
He adored animals, especially dogs and cats. His most recent rescue, Bluesy Belle, was sweet, sassy, and spoiled, just like how he treated all his fur babies.
Jeff was preceded in death by his father Frank, mother June, sister Gayla, and oldest brother Frank Jr. (Skip). He is survived by his brothers Pete and Joe, Pete's wife Joni and their children Whitney and Caleb, Joe's wife Frances and their children Jennifer, Michelle, and Joey. His niece Staci, her husband Bill, and their children Jordan, Shelbie, Gabriel, and Tristan. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends who were like family.
Though Jeff never had children of his own, he was an incredible uncle. Anywhere, anytime, he'd show up, no hesitation, no conditions. Just love.
He had a soft spot for bald eagles and bears. Every Christmas and birthday, we'd hunt down figurines, paintings, or anything with an eagle or bear on it. He would be so thrilled and proudly display it amongst the rest of his collection.
He spent his life defying odds and beating doctors' expectations, with a strength that was both admirable and exasperating (like actually going to the doctor!) But that was Jeff: a man who lived on his own terms, with grit, grace, and a grin that said, "I've got this. No problem."
Jeff wouldn't want us to mourn in silence. Jeff may have lived in a world without sound, but he lived out loud, with bold joy, big gestures, and a laugh that could be felt across the room. He'd want stories, laughter, and maybe a few eye-rolls at his antics. If you have a memory, a moment, or a piece of Jeff that lives on in you, share it. Let's fill this space with the love he gave so freely.
He was a friend to all. A lovable bear with a golden heart. We were so very fortunate to know and love him.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial donations be make in Jeff's memory to Helping Hands Humane Society or to the Cat Associatoin of Topeka.
