Jennifer Schmidt, a woman of extraordinary empathy, generosity, and intellect, passed away recently after a courageous journey with cancer. Her life was a shining example of kindness, academic excellence, and unwavering dedication to her endeavors, leaving a profound legacy for those who were fortunate enough to know her. Jennifer cultivated a lifelong love of learning. She earned her bachelor's degree studying English and psychology from the College of St. Benedict and pursued advanced studies at Drew University, where she completed both her Master of Arts and doctoral degrees in English Literature. Her scholarly achievements were complemented by her deep commitment to sharing knowledge and inspiring others, a commitment she fulfilled throughout her academic career. Jennifer's teaching journey spanned continents, with positions at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Drew University, St. Augustine College in Johannesburg, North West University in Mahikeng, South Africa, and North Hennepin Community College in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. Her more than 10 years living in South Africa profoundly influenced her life, as she built meaningful connections with colleagues and students and made an indelible mark on the academic community there. Jennifer's research and expertise in English literature earned her the opportunity to present her work at conferences across the United States, Canada, South Africa, and Europe. However, her academic accomplishments were only part of her story. She was known just as much for her compassion, generosity, and empathy, qualities that made her a cherished friend, mentor, and family member. A devoted animal lover, Jennifer was a steadfast companion to her beloved cats, Wesley and Illyria, who brought her immense comfort and joy. She carried the same care and affection into her relationships with friends and family. Though her parents, Mary and Jerome Schmidt, preceded her in death, her memory will be lovingly upheld by her sister, Jacqueline Schmidt, and her brother, Jeffrey Schmidt. Jennifer's life was a testament to the power of empathy and the importance of intellectual curiosity. She will be remembered for her boundless generosity, her passion for literature, and the profound kindness she showed to everyone she encountered. Her memorial service will be held Monday 1PM February 17th at Lake of the Isles Church, 2020 W Lake of the Isles Parkway in Minneapolis, to be followed by a gathering in the fellowship hall. To honor her memory, contributions can be made to Feline Rescue in St. Paul, Minnesota. Jennifer touched countless lives with her wisdom and her heart. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy will endure in the lives of her loved ones, her students, and the communities she so deeply enriched. May she rest in peace, remembered with love and gratitude.
