Jeremiah J. "Corky" Regan, Jr. age 91 of Wilmington, DE died September 18 at Wilmington Hospital after a brief illness. Born and raised in Wilmington's 40 Acres neighborhood, Corky was the oldest child of the late Jeremiah J. Regan, Sr. and Della Kelly Regan, both of Ireland.
He graduated from Salesianum High School in 1951 and worked for Delmarva Power until his retirement there in 1994. He spent many summers with family and friends at the Delmarva Power swimming complex in Newark. During his retirement he traveled with his late wife Barbara up and down the Eastern seaboard, especially to Gavin's Irish Country Inn in the New York Catskills and Miami, FL to visit his sister, Marie. He also loved visiting family in counties Cork and Mayo, Ireland. Corky cheered on his grandson Joshua during many home and away games for the Clemson Tigers football team from 2010-2014. Aside from the Tigers, he was a life-long Phillies and Eagles fan, and even played semi-pro football after graduating high school.
He loved spending time with his children and grandkids, taking them to Shady Maple in East Earl, PA and sharing his favorite treat, a Wendy's frosty. Up until his death, he followed sports, politics, and current events, debating those topics with everyone. Corky was a long-time parishioner of Elsmere's Corpus Christi RC Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of IBEW Local 1238 and a former state council member of the AFL-CIO. During the 70s and 80s he was Democratic co-chair of the 14th Representative District. He introduced his kids to politics early and tortured them with frequent literature drops for his favorite politicians.
Corky was preceded in death by his beloved wife Barbara M. Regan (2003) and his brothers Dennis P. Regan and John "Reds" Regan.
He is survived by his sister Marie C. Regan of Melbourne, FL; sister-in-law Josephine S. Regan of Wilmington; three daughters Susan Regan Gregson (Rich) of Downingtown, PA, Kathy Regan Blackmon (Craig) of Elsmere, and Betsy Anderson (Joe) of Oak Hill; six grandchildren Quinton L. Watson (Marina), Joshua J. Watson, Byron Jenkins (Nyja), Trevor Parham (Nicole), Patrick J. Gregson, and Ashley R. Gregson; four great-grandchildren; and countless nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Visitation is 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 24 at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd, Pike Creek followed by an 11:00 funeral service there, and interment at Silverbrook Memorial Park, Lancaster Ave., Wilmington., www.dohertyfh.com.
