Jerry Dean Byrum, 75, of 3991 Butler Drive, died Wednesday, November 27, 2024, in his home where he was cared for by his family.
Mr. Byrum was born in Norfolk, VA on March 22, 1949, and was the son of the late George Oris and Bernice Bunch Byrum. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Libby Orvin.
Retired from Ford Motor Company where he worked in the Norfolk Assembly Plant, he later with his wife owned and operated Jerry & Polly’s Lawn Care. An avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish, he was a member of the Selwin Hunt Club in Gates County, NC, and of Southside Baptist Church in Chesapeake, VA. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Surviving is his wife of 48 years, Marian Clayton “Polly” Byrum; his daughter, Michelle Eanes (Jimmy) of Chesapeake; his son, Jason Byrum (Summer) of Suffolk; his brother, Wayne Byrum of Hobbsville; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren (with another due to be born in February), and many extended members of the Byrum and Bunch families.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, and will be conducted by the Rev. Matthew Johnson. A private burial will follow in the Bunch Family Cemetery near the Selwin Crossroads community. Friends may visit with the family Saturday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home, or all other times at the residence.
