Jerry J. Smutney, 79, of South Windsor, loving husband of 58 years to Donna (Curtis) Smutney, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, November 16, 2025. He was born on March 19, 1946, in Burgettstown, PA, one of two children to the late Joseph and Eileen (Crane) Smutney.
Jerry grew up in Pennsylvania where he grew up on a farm. He was a graduate of Avella High School, Class of 1964. Following high school, he continued his education at West Virginia University where he earned a degree in Aerospace Engineering. After graduating from college, he married his high school sweetheart and they moved to Connecticut where he began his career at Pratt and Whitney. Jerry went on to earn a master's degree from RPI. He was proud to say he worked for Pratt for 42 years. In his early retirement, he enjoyed traveling to many different places around the world with his wife and dear friends. He was a hardworking and honest man.
Jerry loved his family fiercely. He devoted his time to raising his children. One of his favorite things to do was coach their soccer teams. One of his proudest accomplishments was he and his wife founding, both the first boys and girls travel soccer teams in South Windsor. Jerry loved spending time with his family. He truly enjoyed enriching them with many stories of his past, even sometimes making it a game where the grandchildren made out with a little money. His famous Christmas roast will be so missed. Jerry spent his free time keeping up the most meticulous lawn, working in his wood shop and following the lives of his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Jerry is survived by his son, Chad C. Smutney and his wife Cristin of Watertown, CT; his daughter, Lauren Suffish and her husband Joel of South Windsor; his four adored grandchildren, Evan, Taryn, Mason, and Elise; his brother, Tony Smutney and his wife Susan of Burgettstown, PA; as well as many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, November 23, 2025, from 3-5 p.m. at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 24, beginning at 11 a.m. at St. Junipero Serra Parish – St. Margaret Mary Church, 80 Hayes Rd., South Windsor. All guests are kindly asked to please go directly to the church. At the request of his family, burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to South Windsor Soccer Club, 1257 John Fitch Blvd, South Windsor, CT 06074.
