Jerry was born on June 10, 1943, in Burkburnett, Texas, to Jess and Jessie Lee Johnson Stevens, Jerry lived a full life defined by hard work, generosity, and deep devotion to his family. A proud American, Jerry enlisted voluntarily in the U.S. Army in 1961, serving honorably until 1964. Stationed primarily in Germany, he completed his service at Ft. Benning before returning home to build the life he dreamed of. On October 1, 1966, he married his high school sweetheart and lifelong love, Janelle Ann Gordzelik, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Their marriage was a bond built on faith, hope, and endless love-a partnership of over 59 years that remained his proudest accomplishment. Jerry’s career reflected his entrepreneurial spirit and fearless nature. After working at Celanese Chemical Plant from 1966 to 1981, he struck out on his own, building a remarkable variety of businesses throughout his life. From car dealerships and collision repair centers to convenience stores, even a ski lodge in Cuchara, restaurants, real estate ventures, and last but not least, Rounders Club. Jerry loved it! Janie did not, to say the least. But that was Jerry, his drive and imagination knew no limits. It didn’t matter if it was a good idea or not, Jerry was not afraid to try anything. And the most amazing attribute was that if one of Jerry’s dreams didn’t work out, it would be ok. He was most definitely not a quitter. He would start over the next day, even if all he had was $20 in his pocket!
Some of his favorite aspects of life other than family and entrepreneurial challenges were admiring classic hot rods, specifically Corvettes and Grand Nationals, watching his favorite movie American Graffiti, listening to his favorite song Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress), and traveling to Las Vegas where his primary mission and first stop was always In-N-Out Burger! Those who knew Jerry will remember his kindness, generosity, and steady willingness to offer a hand up. He loved his wife and children above all else, ensuring that they never went without. He had an unexpected admiration for his cats and an unforgettable exuberance when the turbo kicked in on any of his Buick Grand Nationals that he owned over the last 30 years.
Jerry resided at Ussery-Roan Texas State Veterans Home in Amarillo for his last 381 days of life. He was given the most wonderful care. All the nurses and staff provided a pleasant, caring, and nurturing environment. It was an amazing feeling to be welcomed every day by such compassionate people. Teresa with BSA Hospice provided exceptionally devoted attention and care to Jerry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jess and Jessie Lee. And Jerry was the last and youngest surviving sibling of 11 children in chronological order; Norma, Randall, James, Billy, Bobby and Wilma (twins), Faye, Charlie, Kenneth, and Buddy.
Jerry is survived by his beloved wife and “honey” Janie; his daughter, Selena Ann Lenz (Michael); and his son, Rhett Dwayne Stevens; and his most beautiful jewels that lit up his life were his grandchildren, Mary Catherine Lenz (James House) and John Paul Lenz and Joseph Anthony Lenz and his most favorite visitor over the last few years was his only great grandson, Connell Joe House; and numerous nephews and nieces including a special nephew, Jimmy Stevens, who was like a brother to him.
The family suggests memorials be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Ussery-Roan Texas State Veterans Home or BSA Hospice of the Southwest.
