Jill Suzanne Carpenter, beloved wife of Dr. Thomas Grady Carpenter for 62 years, passed away on January 29, 2026, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, TN at the age of 81. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jennifer E. (Carpenter) Branson (Neil Branson).

Jill is survived by her husband, Dr. Thomas Grady Carpenter; her two sons, Todd Carpenter (Robin) and Timothy Carpenter (Melody); ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her great joy.

Jill and Tom met at the age of 19 while both working for Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria, Illinois. Jill quickly distinguished herself, earning a promotion to Executive Secretary for the Vice President of Caterpillar. Their lifelong partnership began shortly thereafter.

Born and raised in Chillicothe, Illinois, Jill moved to Mississippi soon after marriage so Tom could pursue his Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering at Mississippi State University. Over the years, their journey took them to Lubbock, Texas for five years, then to Columbus, Ohio, where Jill lived for 33 years. Later, they settled on a beloved tree farm in Holly Springs, Mississippi, which Jill cherished deeply and where she was close to her children and family.

Jill had a genuine love for life, travel, and meeting new people. She worked for several years as a travel agent and, together with Tom, traveled extensively throughout Europe, Africa, South America, Alaska, Hawaii, and the South Pacific. Jill was known for her warmth and friendliness, she never met a stranger. She had a remarkable memory, always remembering names and even phone numbers she had dialed long before.

As an active member of Slayden Baptist Church, Jill found a loving community there and formed many meaningful friendships. She will be remembered for her kindness, joy, sharp mind, and the love she shared so freely with everyone she met.

Her legacy lives on in the lives of her family, friends, and all who were blessed to know her.

Lovingly written by the family to honor a life well lived.
