Gary Carpenter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Arner Funeral Chapel - Chester on Mar. 18, 2026.
On Sunday, March 15, 2026, the world lost one of its brightest sparks as Gary Allan Carpenter of Chester bid farewell at St. Mary's Alzheimer's Center in Columbiana. His journey-rich with laughter, love, and selfless service-came to a gentle close, surrounded by those who cherished him.

Gary was born in East Liverpool on November 7, 1939, a son of the late William W. and Fannie "Leonore" Buchanan Carpenter. He was 86 years old.

Gary's life was defined by a work ethic developed early as a newspaper delivery boy. From the rhythmic hum of steel mills where he served as a motor inspector, to the intricate circuits he mastered as an Instrument Technician at Airco Industrial Gases, Gary found wonder in every challenge. He lit the minds of future electricians at East Liverpool Technical School, sharing not just knowledge but a contagious enthusiasm for learning. A 1958 Chester High School graduate and recipient of a Kent State University teaching certificate, Gary's wisdom extended far beyond textbooks. For 4 years of active duty, he watched the skies as a Long-Range Radar Technician with the US Air Force and 23 years in the Air Force Reserve as a Crash Rescue specialist. Gary began in the 7911th in Pittsburgh and retired from the 910th in Youngstown. Ever vigilant, ever dedicated. As Scout Master and volunteer firefighter and EMT, first with the Chester VFD and later with the Lawrenceville VFD, he was a quiet hero, always first to lend a hand and last to seek praise. In his spare time, Gary enjoyed roller skating, bowling, puzzles, hunting, and spending time with his horses.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandson, Michael A. Backus, brother, Ronald "Keith" Carpenter, and sister-in-law, Quynh Carpenter.

Left to celebrate Gary's remarkable life are his beloved wife, Dinah Graham Carpenter, his partner in adventure for nearly 60 years; his daughters, Wendy M. (Keith) Backus and Sheryll L. Hertzler, both of Chester; and his grandchildren, Aaron (Stephanie Allison) and Morgan (Doug Roe) Hertzler, who will carry his stories forward. Gary's siblings-Linda S. DeShon of Kingsport, TN; Gloria Gargano of East Liverpool; David W. (Qui) Carpenter of Satellite Beach, FL; and his sister-in-law, Arvella Carpenter of Oxon Hill, Maryland, and "his special children who enjoyed visiting with, Kendra, Makenzi, Evyanna, Karlena, Hendrix, and always on is lap, his feline Lady -are keepers of his memory, holding dear the laughter and wisdom he shared.

The Carpenter family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate caregivers of St. Mary's Alzheimer's Center and Sanctuary Hospice, who helped shepherd Gary through his final chapter with dignity and grace. Graveside services, complete with full military honors, will be held in the Chapel at Locust Hill Cemetery on Saturday, March 21, at 2:00 p.m., where friends and family will gather to honor a life beautifully lived. Gary's services are in the compassionate hands of the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester.
