Newcomer Funeral Home - Green BayJames H. Overly Sr, 81, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on March 28th in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He died of natural causes accompanied with late-stage dementia.
He was born on December 19th 1944, to Virginia Utnehmer-Overly in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
He attained Eagle Scout by age 18, attended college at UW Milwaukee. He then met the love of his life, Susan Gollakner, and they were united in marriage on April 2, 1966. Together they were blessed with 60 wonderful years of marriage and two beloved sons. Jim served his country during the Vietnam war and was a Veteran of the United States Army. Upon returning home he became a master Carpenter eventually owning and running his own construction/homebuilding company for many years. He retired as a cabinet maker.
He was an avid outdoorsman and spent much of his free time hunting large and small game, fishing and camping year-round throughout the Midwest and Upper Peninsula, together with his family. He was an accomplished woodworker, painter and craftsman and an avid historian of Southwestern/Native American studies. He was regarded by many to be a true renaissance man.
Jim is survived by his Wife Sue, their two Sons, James S Overly Jr (Linda Hansen-Overly) and Derek Overly (Rena Overly). Their Grandchildren, Brendon, Luke, Sawyer, Angela, Brandy, Elijah, Dylan and Joe, and their Great-Grandchildren Aiden, Mia, Leo and Norah. And he is further survived by his Brother, Bob Overly (Mettja Roate-Overly), and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother Virginia Overly, Uncles Bud (Jean) Austad and Wally Utnehmer.
Jim was provided Hospice services during the last couple months of his life and the family would like to thank and recognize the wonderful service Heartland Hospice and its staff provided during this time.
A Visitation will be held at Newcomer (340 S. Monroe Ave.) on Monday, April 13th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, with a Memorial Service to follow at 4:00pm.
