She grew up with her family on her grandfather John Nettesheim's dairy farm in Muskego, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of the late Bennet Francis Nettesheim of Muskego and the late Virginia Isobel Nettesheim (Curci) of Buffalo, New York. Mary was raised along with her older brother David, younger sister Rita, and half-brothers Kenneth Abel and Donald Abel. Mary attended St. Joseph's Elementary School in Big Bend, Wisconsin, graduating in 1966. She attended Catholic Memorial High School in Waukesha, Wisconsin, graduating in 1970. She then attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, earning a BFA in Fine Arts in 1975.
Mary worked most of her adult life in clerical positions, spending most of her working career at Midway Motor Lodges in Brookfield, Wisconsin. She enjoyed sewing and cooking, as well as continuing to hone her artistic skills with sketching and painting. She and her sister Rita spent summers with their dogs exploring Wisconsin's many state parks. Mary also was a student of Tae Kwon Do and belonged to a Middle Eastern belly dance troupe. A lifelong Catholic, Mary was a member of Saints Cyril & Methodius Parish in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
