J. Margo Eichwald (1939-2024)
Margo Eichwald, 84, of Corrales, NM died peacefully, surrounded by family on February 9, 2024.
Margo was born in Kilgore, TX in1939 to Joyce LaSeur and Jimmie Walsh, and later adopted by Morgan Nelson and grew up in Carlsbad and Roswell, NM. She attended Roswell High School before studying nursing at University of New Mexico and later had a long and rewarding career as a family practice nurse in Albuquerque.
While at UNM, she met the love of her life, Lawrence Eichwald. It was her smile that caught Larry's eye. Margo noticed his beautiful blue eyes and his endearing charm. Excited to start their new life together, the two were married in Roswell NM and shortly there after moved to Seattle , Washington where Ricardo was born, followed by Maria and then Michelle in Albuquerque. The family settled in Corrales in the 70's with Larry's extended family nearby.
With Larry's untimely death, Margo raised her children as a single mom. Even though it wasn't always easy, she did it with gratitude, strength, and independence. Her motherly wisdom wasn't limited to her own kids, either, as her door was always open to anyone who needed a kind word or just wanted to hang out. Whether she was cooking a big meal, helping you with a health issue, or asking how your day was going, her empathy shined.
Margo will be remembered for her bright smile, her infectious laugh and her enthusiasm for adventure. She loved to travel, to take care of her beautiful lily pond, and to get immersed in crafting projects. Holidays were her favorite time of year and her Christmas displays and collections are legendary.
Margo was preceded in death by Larry, her parents, Joyce and Morgan Nelson, and is survived by her children Ricardo Eichwald [MariaTheresa], Maria Mager [Bryan], Michelle Goitia [Michael], her sisters Ann Houghtaling [Sonny], Jane McLaughlin[Weldon] and her grandchildren whom she adored: Maia, Esai, Jesse, Jennifer [Nate], Lawrence, Sarah and great-grandson, Kai.
We couldn't have asked for a better mom, grandmother, auntie and friend and we will miss Margo every day. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.
A celebration of life will be held Friday, February 16, 2024 at 10:00am at St. Andrew Church, 5301 Ponderosa Ave NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110, followed by interment at Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers please make donations to St Andrew Presbyterian Church homeless projects.
