Born Jo Ann Mae Ritland on September 4, 1940 in North Dakota, she was the daughter of Thore and Gertrude (Nomeland) Ritland. The family later relocated to Marshalltown, Iowa, where Jo Ann has since called home. She graduated from Marshalltown High School with the class of 1958.
Jo Ann was united in marriage to the love of her life, Charles "Charlie" Butcher in 1959 and later they were blessed with their miracle son. Well known around the community, Jo Ann was a bubbly social butterfly. She was incredibly artistic, owning Jo Ann's Ceramics and teaching ceramics classes. She also owned and operated an antique shop with her husband. Her passion for helping people led to her career as a real-estate duo with Charlie. Jo Ann worked hard to find homes for the families she served and made many wonderful connections over the years.
Jo Ann had an eye for decorating and loved antiques. She loved inviting friends and family over to enjoy her "garden oasis," a beautiful backyard complete with rare hasta plants and a koi pond. Jo Ann loved to travel: many trips over the years to Las Vegas for Black Jack tournaments and most recently, a trip to Norway to see where her family came from. She also enjoyed watching Christmas movies on the Hallmark Channel, as well as Golden Girls and Reba. Jo Ann was a member of Elim Lutheran Church and very involved in the Marshalltown Community over the years. She was proud to be a Bobcat and loved supporting the local sports, especially watching her grandsons play. Most of all, she loved her family more than anything.
Left to cherish her memory is her beloved husband of 64 years, Charlie; her son, Lance Butcher; grandsons: Austin (Sabrina) Butcher and Ryan (Emma) Butcher; three great-grandchildren: Sully, Anna and Charlotte "Charlie" Butcher; and several nieces and nephews.
In eternal life, Jo Ann is reunited with her parents Thore and Gertrude, her brother and sister, and her daughter-in-law Missy Butcher.
