It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Joan Bell Buratti, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, who left this world on December 22, 2025, at the age of 76, at home in
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Born on August 18, 1949, in
Fredericksburg, Virginia, Joan's spirit was as vibrant as the flowers she lovingly tended in her garden.
Joan Edwina Bell grew up in
Bealeton, VA and was a proud graduate of Fauquier High School. Joan embarked on a successful career as an insurance agent with Carr and Hyde Insurance Agency in Warrenton, Virginia, until her retirement in 2003. Her dedication to her work was matched only by her commitment to her family and friends, whom she touched with her warm kindness and honesty.
Joan was a devoted wife to Ronald H. Buratti. Ron and Joan were married in 2001, when they began their journey together living in Viewtown, VA. In 2003, they relocated to Saint Mary's county Maryland to be closer to Ron's work at the Naval Air Warfare Center. They had many happy years in St. Mary's where they enjoyed boating and gardening as well as making many friends. In 2016, they relocated to
Hilton Head Island, SC for retirement. Joan made many friends at Port Royal Plantation in Hilton Head and was an active member of the board of directors, garden club and several Mahjong groups.
Joan was a loving mother to her family, and a doting grandmother to Alec Martin and Meredith Martin. She is preceded in death by her parents, John Edwin Bell, and Hazel Ritchie Bell as well as her son, Kevin John Martin (Christine).
Joan embraced each relationship with energy and passion, often sharing her love for gardening and her affection for her beloved cats. Her love for felines was only bested by her care and knowledge of plants. Her gardens in both Maryland and South Carolina were the envy of the neighborhood and friends knew they could rely on her for advice on gardening tips.
Joan was a woman of remarkable character, known for her genuine kindness and unwavering integrity. Her legacy lives on through her family, who will forever cherish the memories of their time spent with her. Joan's warmth, love, and laughter will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her absence will be deeply felt every day.
In honoring her life, we invite those who knew Joan to reflect on the joy she brought into their lives and to carry forward her spirit of kindness and generosity. As we gather to remember our beloved Joan, we celebrate a life well-lived marked by love, laughter, and an unwavering devotion to family.
The family is grateful for the care received at MD Anderson Cancer Center and St. Joseph's Candler Oncology, especially that of Dr. Milind Javle, Dr. Gary Thomas and the many oncology nurses for their support during her illness.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on January 16, 2026, at the Moser Chapel, 233 Broadview Ave.
Warrenton, VA with a reception to follow at the next-door Moser House. There will also be a celebration of life at Hilton Head Island to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Joan Buratti, MD Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, TX 77210-4486 or MDAnderson.org/Gifts.
Joan will be lovingly remembered and missed by all. The family appreciates your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
