Joan Benson Capello, 90, passed away peacefully at home on January 28, 2026, with her children by her side.
Joan was born in Manchester Memorial Hospital on March 8, 1935, to Arthur Wesley Benson and Katharina Luise Schuetz, and spent her early life in Manchester and on Coventry Lake. In the 7th grade while at Robertson School, Joan saw Rudy Capello for the first time in the hallway and told her best friend that she was going to marry him someday, and on June 2, 1956, she did just that. After their marriage at South Methodist Church, Joan and Rudy moved to California to start their adventure together and made their home in the Bay Area before moving back to Manchester about a year later with their first child.
Joan enjoyed antiquing, skiing in Vermont and Colorado, and decorating her home for every holiday. She loved Disney World and has been there at least yearly since it opened in 1971. Her biggest joy came from spending time with her children and family. After graduating high school, Joan worked as a telephone operator, then spent many years as a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker. Joan then became the Vice President for Custom Carte Commissary, the family catering business.
Joan was predeceased by her loving husband of 65 years, Rudy, in 2021, her sister and best friend Carol in 1979, and her brother Arthur in 2013. Joan leaves behind her three children, Jill Capello Casey and husband Justin of MA, Gina Capello of CT, and Rudy Capello Jr. and husband David Malinowski of CT. She leaves three grandchildren, Jason Capello and Jen of NY, Sara Koopmans and Ken of VA, and Aram DerAprahamian of CT. She also leaves 3 great-grandsons, John, Jackson and Henry, and 2 great-granddaughters, Grace and Catherine.
Joan also leaves many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Joan's family would like to thank Adelle, Bevolin and Donna, who provided Joan with companionship and joy during the past several years, as well as JFS Care at Home.
Joan has a great sense of humor, was always a lady, and was selfless in every way possible. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
