Joan (Bacon) Caputo
January 7, 1945 – August 11, 2025
Joan Caputo, 80, of Somerville, passed away peacefully at Beth Israel Hospital on August 11, 2025, surrounded by her family. Born in Stoneham, Massachusetts to the late Henry and Hilda Bacon, Joan was the wife of the late Stefano Angelo Caputo. She was also predeceased by her beloved sister, Janice Campano. She lived most of her life in Somerville, cherishing the same home for 57 years. Together, Joan and Stefano owned and operated Caputo's Pizza and Subs in Somerville, serving delicious food and creating a gathering place filled with warmth and laughter.
Joan was the devoted mother of Sal Caputo and his wife, Amy, of Dracut; Grace Caputo Kalimungabo of Somerville; Angela Caputo Griswold and her husband, David, of Chelmsford; and Donna Caputo of Somerville. She was the cherished Nonna of Owen Griswold, Samantha Caputo, Ellen Griswold, Adam Kalimungabo, and Christina Caputo. She is also survived by her dear nephew, Paul Campano of Boston, and two beloved nieces, Grazia Losco and Fiorella Losco of Italy.
Known for her unwavering strength, tireless work ethic, and generous heart, Joan dedicated her life to caring for her family. Through her determination and sacrifices, she ensured her children had opportunities for education and stability, and throughout her life, she continued to help them establish their homes and lives. She was also a second mother to many of her children's friends, welcoming them with the same love and care she gave her own.
Joan was deeply compassionate and protective, always putting the safety and wellbeing of those she loved first. She adored animals, supporting humane societies throughout her life, and was especially fond of hosting gatherings-her legendary pool parties in Somerville were full of food, drink, laughter, and the company of dear friends and family.
In keeping with her wishes, there will be no traditional wake or funeral service. A private burial was held on Monday, August 18th, at the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan's memory may be made to the Lowell Humane Society, 951 Broadway Street, Lowell, MA 01854, honoring her lifelong love and advocacy for animals.
Joan's life was defined by love, resilience, and generosity. She was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
