Joan Clarke Downey, 89, passed away peacefully at the Catholic Hospice at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday August 31, 2023, with family by her side. She is survived by her beloved twin sister Joyce, her children David (Julie) and Anne (Chuck); her grandchildren Megan (Tyler), Nicole (Alex), and Nicholas; her great grandchildren Luke and Emma; and many nieces and nephews. Pre-deceasing Joan was her husband Charles and her siblings Martin, Francis, Redmond (Buddy), John, Evelyn (Goldie), Kathleen (Kay) and Margaret.
Joan was born and raised in Montreal, Canada, as one of nine children to Anne Fury Clarke and John Clarke. After completing her schooling and working at the Royal Bank of Montreal, Joan made her way to South Florida with her twin sister Joyce to pursue their dreams. They followed in the footsteps of their older sister Kay and brother John. It was there that Joan met the love of her life, Charles Downey. They fell in love, got married, and together raised their beautiful family in Fort Lauderdale. As her children grew up, Joan worked at JC Penney until she retired.
In their golden years, after losing their husbands, both Joan and Joyce shared precious moments between Montréal and South Florida. They cherished time spent with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. These memories will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew them.
