Mrs. Joan Balady Humphrey, age 98, of Burlington passed away at home on Monday, February 3, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Paterson, NJ, she was the daughter of the late George and Leona Balady. She was married for nearly 69 years to Mr. John M. Humphrey, Jr., also of the home, who survives. She was the devoted mother of four girls and grandmother of six who brought her much joy. She and John moved to Burlington in 1964 and immediately became members of Blessed Sacrament Church where she was an active member of many women’s groups, served as Eucharistic Minister, and visited the sick and homebound. Joan retired from AT&T after 20 years of service. While there, she made many friendships making the rounds as a part-time Avon beauty consultant. She was an avid bowler (and breaker of records) and entered many bowling tournaments across the U.S. You’ll find more than one mention of her in the Times-News “Throwback Thursday” section for her high scores-she continued to excel in bowling at the Senior Games well into her 80’s. Joan and John volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Loaves and Fishes. Joan was a lover of games and puzzles of all types…and wanted everyone to win. She was a member of a Canasta group that gathered for many years. She loved to play bingo and cards at the local senior center. Joan “showed up” and brought the joy…always.
Mrs. Humphrey is survived by her husband, John, four daughters: Janet Haslebacher, Wanda Curtis, Barbara Dunning (Michael) and Joanie Tyler (John); six grandchildren: Lindsay Hilliker (Alex), Adam Haslebacher, Luke Haslebacher (Faith), Austin Curtis, Madison Dunning and Olivia Dunning (Cody Farrell); six great-grandchildren, one sister, Gloria Altemus, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers, three sisters, and a beloved son-in-law, Chuck Haslebacher. The family would like to acknowledge the loving care provided by her home aide, Peggy Locklear.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1620 Hanford Rd., Graham, NC 27253 at 11:00 am Friday, February 7, 2025. Interment will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 10:45 am Friday morning at the church before the service.
