Joan Mattison, of Novi, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, entered eternal life on Wednesday afternoon, August 7, 2024. She was 93 years old.
Joan was born May 16, 1931, in Rochester, NY, to the late Edward and Irene (Rule) Whincup. She was raised in Royal Oak and graduated from high school in 1949. In 1950, Joan married the love of her life, Lowell Jack Mattison, who passed away in 1967.
Joan's dedication to education was a significant part of her life. She graduated from Oakland University with a degree in education and went on to earn two master's degrees from the same institution. Joan's teaching career spanned several decades, primarily within the Troy School District, where she taught middle school students. Her love for her students and passion for teaching kept her in the classroom well into her 70s.
Beyond her professional achievements, Joan was an avid art collector and a highly skilled bridge player. Her talents and interests were vast, reflecting her vibrant personality. Joan was known for her extreme generosity, deep love for animals, and her straightforward, independent nature. She had an impeccable sense of style and an unwavering love for her family.
Joan's legacy is one of dedication, generosity, and love. She touched the lives of many through her teaching, her friendships, and her family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Joan is survived by two devoted daughters, Deborah (Ronnie Harkins) and Cheryl (Glen Willson); cherished grandchildren, Lauren (Tony) Kropinski and Alex Willson; and brothers, William and Richard Whincup. Her memory will be cherished by her family, friends, and former students.
Joan's interment at White Chapel Cemetery, Troy, will follow a private gathering.
Joan's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported them during this time of difficulty.
