Retired Nurse, Joan A Newcomb's (Miller) love of life didn't come to an end with her death. She passed away on January 29, 2024, at the age of 94, after ongoing health issues, surrounded by family who will continue to honor her legacy by living lives to the fullest.
Joan completed her RN training at the Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1951. A few years later, she met her future husband, Everett Newcomb, when he was a patient. After they wed, they moved to Portland, Maine, in 1959, because of the clean water in the city. In 1961, Joan made the decision to take time away from nursing, to raise their son. After 15 years away from nursing, Joan was determined to pass the Maine State Board to again practice Nursing, where she then took a job at the Barron Center for over 30 years.
Joan enjoyed being around family and friends. She was very involved at Trinity Episcopal Church, in Portland, volunteering her time as a member of the Alter Guild, helping in the kitchen, and much more. She enjoyed sitting at home knitting a new sweater, crocheting a new blanket or sewing up a new dress; she was so talented in many ways.
Joan is survived by her son, Charles Newcomb of New Hampshire, and his wife Terry, along with her two granddaughters, Sarah Newcomb and Brianna Hickford, her husband Raymond Hickford, and 5 great grandchildren, Isabella, Lucas, Marc, Raymond, Emmett. Additionally, she is survived by her step-son, John Newcomb of So Portland, ME, and step-daughter Carol Miner, of Nova Scotia, along with many children of their own.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 23, 2pm, at Trinity Episcopal Church, on Forest Ave in Portland, ME. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to The Ronald McDonald House Charities, 250 Brackett St, Portland, ME

I first met Joan more than 60 years ago when her family joined Trinity Episcopal Church. She was warm and friendly, always involved with church activities, always happy to chat with us young people, and always erupting with that distinctive laugh. She and my mom were on the altar guild for years, and I'm so grateful the three of us, plus fellow guild member Joan Dellatorre, got to visit one last time last month. Joan greeted us as warmly as ever, and she laughed just as heartily. Wishing Charlie and his family many happy memories.

I worked with Joan at the Barron Center. I remember her as a kind, caring nurse to all the residents there. She was a lovely person to work with too. While there, I was pregnant with my son and she made a beautiful blanket for him. I still have it. My condolences go out to her family
