Carolyn Mitchell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 28, 2025.
Portland - With deep sorrow and immense gratitude, we announce the passing of Carolyn Sowash Mitchell, who died on August 23, 2025, in Portland, Maine, at the age of 78, following a brief illness. A beloved mother, grandmother, educator, and friend, Carolyn's generosity, hospitality, and intellectual curiosity left a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Born in Washington, D.C., on December 16, 1946, to William B. Sowash and Ruth Mortenson Sowash, Carolyn's early life was shaped by global experiences. Though Bethesda, Maryland, remained home base, she spent formative years abroad with her family in Spain and El Salvador-experiences that sparked her love of culture, learning, and open-hearted hospitality.

Carolyn earned her degree in Art History from Lake Forest College, forming lasting bonds with the Class of 1968. She later received her Master of Library Science from Simmons College, charting a path that combined her love of education, literature, and service.

Her professional life reflected creativity, vision, and dedication to community. As a young librarian at the Portland Public Library, she created Flights of Fancy, a whimsical puppet and radio show that delighted children and adults alike. She later served as Head Librarian at the Waynflete School in Portland for nearly 30 years, where she was a cherished colleague, mentor, and innovator. Whether leading classes on Mayan civilization after a sabbatical in Antigua, Guatemala, spearheading new technology initiatives, or advising student groups like Model U.N., Carolyn inspired generations to think critically, embrace creativity, and celebrate the diversity of the world. Outside of her professional role, she was proud of her entrepreneurial accomplishments as a co-founder of Caravan Beads.

A lifelong learner and advocate for liberal arts education, Carolyn embodied boundless compassion and generosity. She believed deeply in the power of community, education, democracy, and opportunity for all. Her home-shared with her beloved husband, Joe, until his passing-was a place of warm welcome for young people, newcomers, and anyone facing life's challenges. Many found comfort and belonging under her roof, where they were treated like family.

Carolyn was predeceased by her husband, Frank "Joe" Mitchell, and her parents, William and Ruth Sowash. She is survived by her son, Wyatt Mitchell; daughter, Emily Mitchell Madero; son-in-law, David Mario Madero; and granddaughters, Elia Sofia and Devi Josephine Madero, who carry forward her legacy of curiosity, courage, and kindness.

A celebration of Carolyn's life will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at her family home in Georgetown, Maine (57 Oak Road, Georgetown, ME 04548). Light refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carolyn's memory to the CSM Scholarship Fund at Lake Forest College, www.lakeforest.edu/giving. Carolyn lived a life of love, curiosity, and generosity. In remembering her, may we read more widely, welcome more fully, and love more deeply-just as she did.

Meet Caroline and Joe in the late 80s though a good related college friend. In and out threw the years Caoline help my business as a sign maker with Caravan beads. Hence the friendship continued. Was able a few times to visit Georgetown to connect with Avery Johnson and Linda her mother. Caroline was always inviting, kind and caring full of knowledge. Always a great conversation.

Carolyn certainly had a profound impact on my family's life projectory. She had the inspiration and vision for starting Caravan Beads; we were at a Gem and Mineral Show in Marlborough, Mass and as we entered she pulled out her credit card and asked me if I wanted to start a small business where we could buy beads and sell them on my front 3-season porch on Saturdays to our friends as a way of supporting our hobby. We walked out with two small bags of semi-precious stones, pearls and crystals. The vision rapidly grew as people began to show up at my door looking to buy beads! The rest is history! Carolyn, and her husband Joe, were very involved in creating the gestalt of what today is Caravan Beads. We are forever grateful to the Mitchell family for their support and generosity and plan to honor Carolyn so she will always be remembered and be an integral part of our story.
