Joan A. Ross of Des Moines, born on July 30, 1941, to Melvin and Retus Griffin in Adelphi, Iowa, peacefully departed this life on March 1, 2025, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Joan's journey was one of hard work, deep devotion, and joyful resilience. For many years, she was the proud owner and operator of Joan's Bar and Grill in Lohrville, Iowa-a beloved gathering place she nurtured with warmth and friendship that drew friends and strangers alike. Upon her well-earned retirement, Joan relocated to Oregon, embracing a new chapter with the same determination and grace that defined her life.
On February 26, 1998, Joan married Steven Ross in Eugene, Oregon. Their union was one based on love, companionship, and mutual respect until Steven's passing on July 13, 2002. Afterward, Joan found her way back to Des Moines, where she could be closer to the family she cherished above all else.
Joan is survived by her devoted daughter, Cindy (Jack) Mitchell; her beloved grandson Matthew (Crystal); treasured great-grandchildren Katelynn and Cole; and her precious great-great-grandson Kaden. She is also mourned by her siblings, Judith Clemens of Oregon, Richard (Donna) Griffin of Iowa, Suzanne (John) Kmet of Missouri, and Leesa (Andres) Castillo of Iowa, along with a multitude of loving nieces and nephews whose lives she touched profoundly. Joan's heart also held a special place for her cherished cat, Molly, whose companionship brought her comfort and joy.
She was preceded in death by her husband Steven Ross, parents Melvin and Retus Griffin, sister Kathleen McDow, brother Michael Griffin, brother-in-law Jerry Clemens and sister-in-law Veronica (Roni) Griffin.
Joan will be remembered as a woman of remarkable character: a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, a steadfast sister, and a loyal friend. Her life was a testament to the power of love for family, kindness to all, and the quiet strength that comes from integrity and compassion.
In honoring Joan's memory, may we carry forward her legacy of generosity, hard work, and unwavering love for those around us.
