Passed away surrounded by family on September 16, 2021, at age 93. Predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Dr. Marvin Shulman; parents, Anne & Dr. Jacob Epstein; brother, Dr. Richard Epstein. She is survived by her sister, Barbra Bianchi, loving children, Wendy (Paul Brindza) Shulman & Peter (Kristin) Shulman; granddaughter, Rebecca Shulman Brindza; first cousin, Betty Wachtel née Reeback; and cat, Peanut.

After graduating from the University of Rochester in Art History and Social Work (1949), Joan took courses in enameling and jewelry making. She participated in the Memorial Art Gallery's Clothesline Art Show and Sale; had pieces of her art accepted in the Gallery's Finger Lakes Exhibit; had a booth at the Waterfront show in Canandaigua; and her jewelry was also shown and sold in a shop in Honeoye Falls. Joan eventually became interested in gas welding and was a member of the Artist in Residence program at Fairport High School for about twenty years. She taught welding to high school seniors, where they made keychains, jewelry and small welded sculptures. Along with a partner, Joan owned Beads 'n' Things, a craft shop in Schoen Place. There, she taught classes in macramé. She also worked for the Nan Miller Gallery and assisted when they did out of town shows. For many years, she was a volunteer at One World Goods in Pittsford Plaza. She continued to keep her hands busy by repairing jewelry for them.

As her vocation, Joan was a child welfare worker and then a volunteer Probation Officer. She and her husband Marvin, a retired optometrist, moved into The Summit in the fall of 2010. Joan's life was long and full of color, she will be deeply missed.

Graveside Services will be held on MONDAY, September 20, 2021 at 10 AM in White Haven Memorial Park. Friends are asked to gather at the main entrance.

Donations may be made to the Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester or the Creative Workshop at the Memorial Art Gallery in her memory.

Meredith Anne Reeback

September 20, 2021

I'm Meredith Reeback, daughter of Robert T. (Bob) Reeback who is also Joan's first cousin, (he is Betty Wachtel née Reeback's little brother). I have been kept up to date on Joan over the years through my dad and also my mom who saw Joan more recently. Dad always spoke so fondly of Joan and Marv and he also has been lucky to visit Joan's sister Barbara and her family many times over the years in Italy. When I visited Joan and Marv way back when in Rochester they were so wonderful and warm. I wish everyone was all closer and always cherish the stories and any news. Joan was a very important figure in my dad's life, accordingly, in mine as well. May her memory be a blessing z"l - my love to the entire family xoxoxo
