ARLENE SHULMAN Obituary

SHULMAN--Arlene. Arlene Shulman, aged 90, died on Sunday, April 27th after a long illness. She was a true New Yorker -- born in the Bronx, a graduate of City College and Columbia Teachers' College, and a NYC public elementary school teacher. Arlene was gifted with a beautiful voice, trained as an opera singer, and performed with the Amato Opera Company. Most of her life was devoted to family -- wife to Abraham and mother to two daughters, one of whom, Rachel, predeceased her. Arlene and Abe were a united team throughout 68 years of marriage. She was also deeply committed to her Jewish community. She held several leadership roles, including chairwoman for the Queens region of Hadassah and as an active leader with the UJA Federation. She is survived by Abraham, daughter Melanie and her husband Gabor Rona, and three grandchildren, Olivia and Jason Goldring and Julia Feigen, to whom she will remain a source of comfort and inspiration. All who knew her will remember her warmth, kindness, intelligence and unwavering dedication to family and community. Services will be held at Schwartz Brothers Funeral Home, 114-03 Queens Blvd, Forest Hills, NY at 11:30am on Sunday, May 4th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the AFTD, the Association for Frontal-Temporal Degeneration, 2700 Horizon Drive, Suite 120, King of Prussia, PA 19406 or UJA-Federation of New York [email protected].
