Joan M. Sofie, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2024, at the age of 89 in St. Augustine, Florida. Joan was born on September 5, 1935, in Mount Vernon, New York, to John and Margaret (Scullin) Gilroy. She grew up in Mount Vernon, where she developed the warmth, kindness, and strong faith that would define her throughout her life.
Joan's passion for helping others led her to pursue a nursing career later in life. She went back to school and earned her nursing degree, graduating in 1975. She worked as a nurse for many years, a job she truly loved, always caring deeply for her patients. Her compassionate nature and dedication to others were a hallmark of her career.
While living in Ohio, Joan enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including bowling and playing golf, which provided her with great joy and many lasting friendships. In 1988, Joan and her husband Joseph moved to Fort Myers, Florida, where they continued their work and enjoyed the warmer climate. In 2020, Joan made the final move to St. Augustine, Florida to live with her daughters.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Sofie, with whom she shared a deep and enduring love. She is survived by her children, John Sofie (Marti); Joan Cornelius (Tim), Jill Cardenas, and her grandchildren, Alexandra, Alicia, Lucas, Andrea, Sara, Rachel, Ben, and Bryan; and her great-grandchildren, Dalton, Colton, and Jaxson. Joan's legacy lives on through her family, who will remember her for her unwavering love, devotion, and the countless lives she touched.
A Catholic by faith, Joan's life was one of service, love, and selflessness. She was known for her generous spirit, her ability to bring comfort to those in need, and her enduring faith that guided her through life's challenges. Her family and friends will always remember her as a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend whose warmth, laughter, and love knew no bounds.
Private services will be held.
Joan will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
