JoAnn Mary Bertrand Bowden passed away peacefully on December 26, 2025, at 11:26 am after battling her struggle with dementia. She was 83 years old. She leaves to mourn her death her oldest daughter, Cheryl Bertrand Scraders, and son, Wayne Griffin; grandsons: Anthony, Carl (Brittney), and Brandon Scraders (Keisha); and her three great-grandchildren: Aaliyah Rose, Kai'Lor, and Leshay Scraders.She also leaves to mourn her death five sisters: Betty B. Walters (John deceased), Lydia B. Turner (Jimmie), Linda B. Duplessis, Beverly B. Cowens, and Elaine B. Denson, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Watson Bowden; her youngest daughter, Lisa Bowden; her grandson, Devon Scraders; as well as her parents, Lillian and Oscar Bertrand Sr., and a sister Shirley Bertrand and six brothers: Oscar Jr., Bobby, Benjamin, John, and Edward Bertrand. JoAnn was born and raised in New Orleans, LA.

She graduated from G.W. Carver Senior High School in the class of 1963. She held numerous jobs after high school but enjoyed working at the Elmer's Candy factory for many years. JoAnn was a devoted Catholic who loved and worshipped the Lord. She also loved gospel and rhythm and blues music. When her son, Wayne, was born, she moved up North to Connecticut, where her mother's late sister lived, met and married Watson Bowden, and started a family. Our family would like to extend an invitation to the G.W. Carver class of '63, family, and friends to attend the Homegoing Memorial Services for 12:30 p.m. held on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at The Boyd Family Funeral Home, 5001 Chef Menteur Hwy., NOLA 70126. We would also like to extend our gratitude, and a special thanks to the Oak Park Care Center Nursing home in St. Louis, Missouri, for their services of care provided to our loved one. Family and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Service on Thursday, February 19, 2026, for 1:00 at The Boyd Family Funeral Home, 5001 Chef Menteur Hwy., New Orleans, LA 70126.
