JoAnn Cooper Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wiley Funeral Home - Granbury on Feb. 16, 2026.
JoAnn Delfina Phelps Cooper, 91, beloved mother, grandmother and sister, of Granbury, Texas, passed away Saturday, Feb. 14, 2026, in Granbury surrounded by her children.

Born March 27, 1934, in Goose Creek (now Baytown), Texas, JoAnn was the daughter of Ivy Virgil Phelps and Youphorsine Mary Cosio Phelps. As a 1952 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown, Texas, she then attended nursing school at St. Joseph's Hospital in Houston. While visiting her cousin, she met the love of her life, Kenneth Don Cooper, after he ran over her suitcase. They married Sept. 25, 1954, at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church in Highlands, Texas. She and Don were blessed with seven children, the result of a good Catholic and a passionate Protestant. JoAnn led a life of service. She spent 25 years in multiple positions of the PTA, ranging from member up to president. In addition to PTA, JoAnn also volunteered as room mother, den mother, and troop leader during her children's formative years. Her service extended to her faith. She served on the National Council of Catholic Women, St. Frances Cabrini Ladies Guild, and as the past president for the Ft. Worth Diocese Council of Catholic Women.

Service to her community was also important to JoAnn. She was a member of the Hood County Extension Education Club, taught cooking classes for 4H and she delivered Meals on Wheels through the Hood County Senior Center, along with planning trips for the senior citizens of Hood County. She was a past board member of Child Protective Services of Hood County. JoAnn was always down for a good time. She enjoyed playing all kinds of games such as SkipBo, Uno, pinochle, moon, and, particularly, Scrabble. Although winning was not her forte, she played with grace and reveled in the camaraderie of spending time with family and friends. She traveled throughout the United States and the world indulging in the local cultures and customs. JoAnn derived much pleasure dancing as a member of the Hood County Line Dancers performing at the Senior Center.

In addition to her parents, JoAnn was preceded in death by her husband, Don, in 1991 and by her second daughter, Paula Sue McDaniel, in 2025 and her nephew, Joseph Phelps in 2016.

Survivors include her children: Donna Mohlman (David), Rita Allen (Lee), Loretta Rudd (David), David Cooper (Angela), Theresa Proctor (Theron), and John Cooper (Tammy); as well as 14 grandchildren: Debra Reynolds, Darren Cherry, Alicia Weedman, Kevin McDaniel, Angela Sexton, Jake Allen, Nicholas Rudd, Emma Rudd, Erin Briden, Joseph Briden, Katie Aguirre, Luke Proctor, Zachary Cooper, Paige Moore, and 17 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, I.R. "Butch" Phelps (Mary Alice) and niece Beth Phelps.

Visitation for JoAnn will be held from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2026, with the Rosary recited at 7 p.m. at Wiley Funeral Home, 400 Highway 377 East, in Granbury. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20, 2026, at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Granbury. A Committal Service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21 at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
