Joann Dye Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hurst Scott Funeral Home on Jan. 17, 2026.
Joann "Geraldine" Dye, age 92, of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, passed away at home on Friday, January 16, 2025.

Geraldine was born in Russell County, Virginia, on May 30, 1933, and was the daughter of the late Frank Preston Slate and Gertie Stilwell Slate.

She was a graduate of Honaker High School and was a proud 1947 basketball player for the Tigers. She went on to obtain her degree at Southwest Virginia Community College and worked for many years as a shipping manager for an industrial company in Tazewell, Virginia. She was a woman set in her ways, liked things done appropriately, and was a meticulous housekeeper. She was a proud member of the Richlands Tabernacle for 70 years. Geraldine truly loved God and would devote her time to praying and reading her bible. She was a lifetime resident of the surrounding area and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Elmer Dye; sisters, Georgia, Margaret, Beulah, and Shirley; and brothers, Frank Jr., Bert, James, and Carol.

Those surviving are her:

Niece, Hannah Neel, and her husband, John, and their daughter, Abby Neel of Christiansburg, VA

Nephew, Cecil Coleman, Jr., and his wife, Tammy of Abingdon, VA; and their son, Jacob (Brittany) of Bristol, TN

Great-great nephews, Jackson and Langston

Special Friend and companion, Thomas "Tom" Roberts of Richlands, VA

Sisters,

Anna Pearl Coleman of Abingdon, VA

Peggy Hess of Richlands, VA

Geraldine shared a beautiful poem to her Dukie and Hannah that touched their hearts so much they wanted to share it with everyone:

Dear Dukie and Hannah, Remember when I come to the end of my journey, and I travel my last weary mile, just forget if you can that I ever frowned, and remember only the smile. Forget unkind words I have spoken, remember some good I have done. Forget that I ever had heartache, And remember I've had loads of fun, Forget that I've stumbled and blundered and sometimes fell by the way, Remember I have fought some hard battles, And won, ere the close of the day Then forget to grieve for my going, I would not have you sad for a day, but in summer, just gather some flowers. And remember the place where I lay, And come in the shade of evening, When the sun paints the sky in the west, Stand for a few moments beside me, And remember only my best, Love, Geraldine
