JoAnn Elizabeth McGonegal, age 84, of Jackson, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on July 17, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones. JoAnn was born on October 1, 1940, to George and Jean (Kimling) Camburn.
A devout Catholic, Joann lived her life grounded in service to others and compassion. She was born and raised in Jackson and attended Queen of the Miraculous Medal and St. Mary Star of the Sea schools. She later lived in Denver, Colorado for a number of years.
From a young age, Joann felt called to help others. Whether through her career, volunteer work, or countless quiet acts of kindness, she touched the lives of everyone who crossed her path. Her generous heart and steady presence offered comfort and hope to many in their times of greatest need. Joann worked at Catholic Charities of Denver before retirement. She served as a volunteer coordinator and senior services coordinator. She loved serving the most vulnerable people and even financially sponsored children and women in need all around the world. She also was a caregiver for two children whose parents died of cancer.
She is survived by her loving children, Kat Makinen and Greg Ross; cherished grandchildren Heidi Michelle and Dakota Anne Makinen; dear great-grandson Cairo Washington; siblings George Michael Camburn, Carol Carrier, and Debbie (Bill) Audas; aunt to many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews; best friend Joyce.
She was preceded in passing by her parents George and Jean Camburn; siblings Mary Camburn, Margaret Camburn, and Richard Camburn.
She will be missed by all who knew her. Following her wishes she has been cremated and the Celebration of Life has been scheduled for near future (will be updated).
