HIGHGATE SPRINGS, VT – JoAnne Myers Campbell, age 72, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 9th, 2025 at the Northwestern Medical Center.
JoAnne was born on August 4th, 1952 in Rockville Center, NY to Joseph and Julia “Rowena” (Giblin) Myers. She was brought up Catholic, was the second of four girls and went to school in Oceanside, NY. She was an excellent student and lifelong learner. She was always recognized as a leader. While attending Oceanside High School, she was elected president of Girls’ Leader Corps, a prestigious athletic club.
She attended college at Plymouth State where she met Hal, the love of her life. She transferred to State University of NY at Plattsburgh where she graduated with a teaching degree in Elementary Education. Later, she got her Master’s Degree at Castleton University. JoAnne always knew she wanted to be an Elementary School teacher, following in the footsteps of her mother who was an Elementary Music teacher. JoAnne’s personality was so outgoing and gregarious that people gravitated to her. Even at a young age, she gave her support and compassion to everyone she met.
After college, JoAnne moved to Highgate Springs, Vermont where she married Harold “Hal” Campbell, III on July 27, 1974. They had two children, Harold “H.D.” Campbell, IV and Heather. JoAnne taught for 45 years at the Highgate Elementary School in Highgate Center, Vermont. She was kind, nurturing, generous, and supportive.
JoAnne was a dedicated, enthusiastic teacher who touched the lives of many students, colleagues, and mentees. She was awarded the honor of Vermont’s Teacher of the Year. With JoAnne’s big heart, she had a lot of friends, remembering birthdays, anniversaries, marriages, always sending a card or a gift. She was a dependable woman who was very involved in her school, church and community. Throughout the years, she led and organized many activities for her children and others including Girl Scouts, 4-H , Catechism, and the Crossroads After School Program to name just a few. For her work in the community, she was presented with a Local Hero Award. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and on the board for the Highgate Public Library.
JoAnne was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and trusted friend to many. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Harold “Hal” Campbell, III; their children, Harold “H.D.” Campbell, IV and his wife Kelly, and Heather Larivee and her husband Chad; grandchildren, Tyler Robinson, Aubry and Harold “Hudson” Campbell, V, Julia and Maria Larivee; sisters, Jean Osborne and Patricia Myers; brothers-in-law, Mark Campbell and his wife Carole and Gregg Campbell; sisters-in-law, Holly Linden and her husband Carl and Tammy Campbell; nieces, Brooke Beloso and her wife Danielle, Rachel Anderson and her husband Drew, Leah and Colleen Osborne, Alexis Campbell and Paige Linden; nephews, Jacob Campbell and his wife Kelsey, Ty “Adam” Campbell, Jr, and Tucker Campbell and his fiance, Stacey. JoAnne was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Rowena Myers; in-laws, Harold “Denny” Campbell, Jr., Marjorie Shaw and her husband Alden; sister, Mary Myers-Cole and her husband Sylvan; brother-in-law, Ty Campbell, Sr.; nephew, Ryan Campbell.
The family would like to thank JoAnne’s nurses and caregivers at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford, Vermont where she has resided for the last two and a half years.
Friends and family are invited to JoAnne’s life celebration events to include a visitation on Monday January 13th, 2025 from 2-4:00 PM and 7-9:00 PM at the Goss Life Celebration Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, VT 05488. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, January 14th, 2025 at 3:00 PM at the Church of the Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton, Vermont 05488.
