Joanne R Lucas

Joanne Ruby Lucas, 85, of Battle Creek, MI, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. She was born on October 13, 1939, in Battle Creek, MI, the daughter of Paul and Ruby (Walker) Cheatham.
Joanne grew up in Battle Creek and graduated from Battle Creek Central in the class of 1956. She continued her education and became an LPN, working with the State of Michigan. Joanne eventually decided to get her master's degree in special education. She worked for Doris Klaussen for 30 years. She was a member at Mt. Zion AME where she worked in multiple youth programs, and served as the Sunday School Superintendent.
Her family owned a cottage in Idlewild, MI, that they called "Up North". The family spent a lot of time at the cottage on the lake, having fun and making memories. She enjoyed taking her children on road trips across the United States, camping along the way.
Later in life, she joined Maranatha Original Church of God. After retirement, she shifted her focus to her grandchildren, taking family vacations, traveling with friends, and giving back to the community by volunteering and filling in as a substitute teacher. She also enjoyed crafting, crocheting, and selling her crafts at local craft shows. Joanne left a beautiful legacy of teaching and charity, she will be greatly missed by many.
Joanne is survived by her Son, James (Felicia) Lucas of Battle Creek, MI; Daughter, Amanda Hardy of Battle Creek, MI; Brother, Paul (Bertha) Cheatham, Jr. and her grandchildren Jasmine Lucas, Maurice Lucas, Jozlyn Ampey, Alayna Satterfield, Hadassah Satterfield, Shanequa (David) Kemp, and Tanequa Hampton. She was preceded in death by her Father, Mother, and husband, Clifford Lucas. Special friends of the family: Allene Broadus, Connie Gray, and Vicky Lucas.
Visitation will be held at the Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service, 375 West Dickman Road, on Saturday May 10, 2025 at 11am.
A funeral service will be held at the Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service, 375 W. Dickman Road, on Saturday, May 10, 2025, 12:00 pm with Malcolm Satterfield officiating.
Interment will take place in the Oak Hill Cemetery.
