Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Cremation Preneed Care - Battle CreekKirk, 65, died unexpectedly at his home in Battle Creek on September 1, 2025. He’d probably want us to keep this short and not make a big fuss — but since we get the last word, here goes.
Kirk grew up in the big white farmhouse on Saint Mary’s Lake Road, where his mother, Marilyn, ran the Art Farm Gallery. He went to Pennfield High School and later moved to Chicago, where he built a life and career in movies and multi-media. Chicago was his home for decades before he returned to Battle Creek in the mid-2010s to be closer to old friends.
If you knew Kirk, you know he was sharp, funny, and a master of perfectly timed sarcasm. He had a love for film and music (especially the B-52s), which gave him endless stories and opinions to share. You could easily lose track of hours in conversation with him. Beneath the sardonic wit was a caring heart and a conscientious nature that made him a steadfast, lifelong friend, especially with Dale, Kelly, John and Sue, among many others he cherished.
Kirk is survived by his sisters, Melissa (Kevin) Patrick and Coby (Jim) Olson, and his nieces and nephews: Courtney, Ally, Samantha, Ryan, and Phillip. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marilyn (Link) and Norman Madsen, and by his beloved boxer, Digby, who was his constant companion.
Kirk will be forever missed and remembered.
A memorial visitation will be held Tuesday, September 23, from 6–8 p.m. at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home, 105 Capital Ave NE, Battle Creek.
Family and friends are invited afterward to stop by to raise a glass and share memories at Griffin Grill & Pub, 38 Michigan Ave W, Battle Creek.
