After attending high school, Joe proudly joined the United States Navy. Upon returning home, he began a long career as a maintenance technician

On October 31, 2007, Joe married the love of his life, Lisa Schlottman, who survives him. Joe was a man who found joy in simple pleasures spending time with his grandchildren, working on anything with a motor (especially cars), and enjoying his interest in firearms. He had a great sense of humor and loved being out on Lake Oliver, taking the boat out with his family and making memories on the water.

Joe is survived by his wife, Lisa (Schlottman) Nightenhelser; his children, Jason (Crystal) Nightenhelser, Lucas ( Andrea) Nightenhelser, and J.J. Nightenhelser; his grandchildren, Kaleb, Lacey, Reese, Paizley, Maxwell, and Kylie; his great-grandchild, Violet.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James Nightenhelser.

Arrangements for Joe have been entrusted to the College Park Chapel of Armes-Hunt Life Celebration Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 4601 South Western Avenue, Marion, Indiana 46953. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2025, from 2:00-4:00 p.m., with a funeral service following at 4:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Steve Armes. Burial will take place at Marion National Cemetery on Monday, December 8, 2025 at 10:00 a.m.
