Joseph Frederick Varner (Joe) passed away on November 4th, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Estill and Helen Varner. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Betty Wright Varner. Also survived by: his step-daughter Jamie O'Daniel, step-son Bobby (Jody) Wright and step-son Courtney (Christina) Wright, step-grandchildren Chasity (Justin) Rehagen, Tyler Todd, Wyatt O'Daniel, Hailey Wright, Destiny (Jordan) Barnes and Lainey Cox, four step-great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, cousin Jane Cook as well as a host of wonderful friends. Joe's commitment to his family and friends was as noteworthy as his many accomplishments.

Joe was a proud member of the United States Air Force. He served as a war time veteran of the Vietnam War. He was known to many as Mr. Soddy Daisy, Senior class president and Captain of the football team. He won the Thom McCann award for football and went on to play at Auburn University became a "War Eagle" by heart.

He received his undergrad and master's degree in education from University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He taught and coached at Hixson Middle School from which he retired.

Those who knew Joe would remember his as a "Legend" in Soddy. He was an avid fisherman and waterfowl hunter. He was known as "Mr. Bass" and held the state record for a time. He once shot two different species of turkeys with one bullet and many of his mounts are on display around the Soddy Daisy community.

Joe was first and foremost a Christian and prioritized putting God first. He was a faithful member of the Soddy Church of Christ. Everywhere he traveled, his light was a beacon for Christ. Joe will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A memorial service for Joe will be on Saturday November 8th, 2025 at Soddy Church of Christ with a visitation starting at 1pm and service at 3pm.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Church of Christ India Fund, Soddy Church of Christ, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
