Born Nov. 29, 1955, in San Antonio, he was the son of Benjamin Paul and Concha Hernandez Alvarado.
His mother and his brother, Enrique Mungia, preceded him in death.
Joel is survived by his wife, Dominga Cuellar Alvarado; son, Joel R. Alvarado, Jr. (Katie) of San Antonio and grandchildren, Christian, Jacob and Rylee.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Guinn-Horger Chapel, with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be at 9:00 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 7, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, followed by interment at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.

Besides him talking about his wonderful immediate family one thing I remember the most of Joel was his love for his 4 legged pup chihuahuas. You were a wonderful coworker and you will surely be missed. As your wings are put upon your shoulders our friends who left us too early will be welcoming you home (Kitty, Aaron, Nena) and many more. I will truly miss him helping me with my computer problems at work. He taught me a lot. He didn't make me feel dumb. I enjoyed his sense of humor and smile. May the Lord send you comfort through out your years.

Wishing the family with peace and love as you go through this terrible loss. I worked across the hall from Joel for the last 10 years at Camino Real and will miss his jokes and sharing of the love of his grandchildren, and his many dog stories. May God give you strength as you go through the days without him.
