JOEL HASEN Obituary

HASEN--Joel. Joel Hasen, widower of Donna E. Bennick, died on March 18, 2023, at his home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at the age of 88 in the company of family. Born in 1934, Joel resided in New York City for most of the first 70 years of his life. He attended the Ethical Culture School in Manhattan and Fieldston High School in the Bronx. He received a B.A. from Cornell University and law degrees from Columbia University and New York University. From 1959 to 2002, he practiced law in New York City, specializing in tax and, later, aircraft leasing. Joel loved design, travel, architecture, classic Broadway shows (and show tunes) and a spirited argument. He also was an avid and accomplished tennis player until an injury sidelined him in his late 60s. He is survived by his daughter Nina and Nina's partner, Ernest Moy; his son David and David's wife, Elis Banducci; and Linda Bennick, mother of Donna. A memorial service will be held on June 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the Ackland Art Museum, 101 S. Columbia St., Chapel Hill, NC 27599. An online option is available for those unable to attend in person. Please contact Nina Hasen for details: [email protected].

Joel was my mentor when I was a newly hired equipment leasing employee with no experience. It just was serendipitous that we were in a meeting representing opposite sides and he saw me floundering around. We worked together on many leasing deals, became friends, shared life experiences and saw each other through deeply tough times. When I suffered a near death experience from an ectopic pregnancy, Joel brought "Bonfire of the Vanities" and read to me for hours most of the night. This is a true friend. We ran in Central Park, visited when we lived in different parts of the US, and always had time to speak on the phone. Joel was the epitome of the Yiddish word - mentsch - and I cherish the memories. The world lost a good one, and for those - his family and friends, who were lucky enough to know him, are all better off having been in his circle. Happy Birthday, Joel, and thank you for you.

This is such sad news that I am just discovering. Joel and I worked together in the equipment leasing realm, were neighbors in NYC and enjoyed running together in Central Park. After he remarried and moved to Chapel Hill, I spent several visits staying with Donna and Joel. He was in his element cooking and enjoying his retirement. My over due condolences to his family and friends.
