John Alexopoulos, 76, of North Brunswick, New Jersey, passed away on Friday, November 8, 2024, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Despite cutting edge treatments and surgery over the last 18 months, he lost his battle with an aggressive and rare form of cancer (Epitheliod Hemangioendothelioma or EHE). Even after such a difficult and painful battle, John remained hopeful and optimistic about the future until the very end.
Born on August 12, 1948, in Kareika, Greece, John was the son of the late Athanasios and Eleni (Markou) Alexopoulos. He was raised in his beloved hometown of Kareika, where he spent his early years and where he proudly served in the Greek Army.
John immigrated to the United States in 1972. He initially settled in Middlesex before moving to North Brunswick, where he made his home and built a life with his family. In 1977, John married Emilia, his loving wife of 47 years, and together they raised two daughters.
He is survived by his wife, Emilia Alexopoulos; daughters, Voula Liroff (Alexander) and Athanasia Hancock (Trevor); his sisters, Niky Gerondelis and Christina Petrantonakis (George); his sister-in-law, Aspasia Alexopoulos; and his beloved cherished grandchildren, Iliana, Amelia, Tyler, and Georgia. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother.
John will be remembered for his quiet acts of kindness and thoughtfulness.
His family was his greatest joy. John was a constant source of love and support for them. John was also a man of many interests and talents. He had a deep love for the outdoors, where he could often be found tending to his garden and lawn with great care. Known as a crafty handyman, he took pleasure in fixing and building things. John also had a passion for following soccer, no matter how big or small the league or game. And was a skilled cook, whose delicious meals were a true expression of his love and creativity.
John was a proud and joyful "papou" to his grandchildren, making them laugh as they worked together in his garden and sharing imaginative ideas for toys that he would bring to life on his workbench.
John was predeceased by his brother, Kyriakos Alexopoulos, and his sister, Georgia Zakynthinou. John is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family members, as well as friends who will miss his kindness, generosity, and warm heart.
A visitation will be held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1101 River Road, Piscataway, NJ, on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, from 9:30 to 11:00 A.M. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 A.M. Interment will take place at Van Liew Cemetery in North Brunswick.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the EHE Foundation. Donations can be made online at www.fightEHE.org.
