Obituary
John R. Ashburn Sr., a longtime Beacon and Wappingers Falls resident, passed way on June 16, 2023 at the Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY; at the age of 82. He was born at the Highland Hospital in Beacon, NY on August 3, 1940, son of the late Harry & Evelyn (Kimble) Ashburn.
John attended Beacon City and Wappingers Central Schools; he enlisted in the United States Navy on August 8, 1957. He served actively as a radarman 2nd class aboard the USS Talbot County (LST 1153), then reserve duty from 1961 to 1963, when he received an honorable discharge for his service.
On January 2, 1958 in Kissimmee, FL, he married Cynthia Jane Peck, who survives him at home.
John worked as a long-distance tractor trailer driver for a local firm in Poughkeepsie, NY; then he worked as a construction equipment operator with the New York State Thruway Authority in East Fishkill. He also worked for Pepsi Co. in Pine Bush, as the water truck driver.
Along with his beloved wife of 65-years of marriage, John is survived by his two sons, Mark J. Ashburn and his wife Rebecca of Las Vegas, NV; Dr. John Ashburn Jr., and his wife Tara of East Fishkill, NY; his three grandchildren, Zachary Ashburn, Alexander Ashburn and Courtney Ashburn. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Cherry Ashburn, and several nieces, nephews, cousins & friends.
Along with his parents, John is predeceased by his brother William Ashburn, and his two sisters Nancy & Barbara.
Arrangements were entrusted to the care of the LIBBY FUNERAL HOME, 55 Teller Avenue, Beacon, New York. As per John's wishes, there will be a private cremation with interment at a later date in the Wappingers Falls Rural Cemetery, Wappingers Falls, NY, at which time he will receive military honors from the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
